Treating Ozempic body loose skin after GLP-1 weight loss
The face changes first, but the body is what people are still covering up a year later. Clients come to us having reached a weight they are happy with, still wearing sleeves in July, still uncomfortable in a swimsuit, wondering why the mirror did not follow the scale.
Loose skin on the body behaves differently from loose skin on the face. There is more of it, it has usually been stretched for far longer, and gravity is working against it. Being clear about what non-surgical treatment can and cannot achieve matters more here than anywhere else.
What Ozempic body means
Ozempic body is the loose, lax or crepey skin left behind after rapid weight loss on a GLP-1 medication. Like Ozempic face, it is not a side effect of the drug. It is what happens when volume disappears faster than skin can contract.
The name comes from the most recognisable brand, but the effect is the same across the class. We see it in clients taking Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide), Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide), and Saxenda (liraglutide). If you have lost a significant amount of weight quickly on any of them, the mechanism is identical.
Where it shows up
Not every area behaves the same way, and a plan that treats them identically will disappoint on at least one of them. We assess each separately. The areas clients raise with us most often, and what each one actually looks like:
Abdomen: Usually the first concern, and the area where skin has typically been stretched longest. It is also the hardest area to treat without surgery, particularly after substantial weight loss or previous pregnancy.
Upper arms: Softness along the back of the arm, noticeable with movement rather than at rest. The skin here is thinner than on the abdomen, which means it tends to respond better.
Knees: Loose skin sitting just above the kneecap, which surprises people who did not expect it. Thin skin under constant mechanical stress. It shows laxity early and responds reasonably well for the same reason.
Inner thighs: Crepey texture and laxity together, which is why this area often needs two different treatments rather than one.
Chest: Thinning and fine lines rather than obvious sagging. The concern here is skin quality more than excess skin, and it is treated accordingly.
Why body skin does not contract
Skin recoils through elastin, the protein that lets it return to position after being stretched. Adults produce very little new elastin, and the fibres you have degrade with age and with sustained stretch.
Body skin has been under that stretch for years rather than months, often across a large surface area. When the volume beneath it disappears over the course of a GLP-1 course, there is no mechanism left to draw it fully back.
Three things determine how much any individual recovers:
- How much weight came off, and how fast: Rapid loss leaves less time for gradual retraction.
- How long the skin was stretched: Someone who carried the weight for two decades starts from a different place than someone who carried it for three years.
- Age and baseline skin quality: Collagen and elastin decline from our thirties onward.
Being honest about what is possible
We would rather say this at the start than after you have paid for a series of treatments.
Non-surgical treatment improves mild to moderate laxity. It thickens the dermis, firms the tissue, and improves texture and tone. For someone who has lost a moderate amount of weight, or who is treating the arms, knees or chest, the results can be genuinely satisfying.
What it does not do is remove excess skin. If you have lost a large amount of weight and have significant hanging skin on the abdomen, no energy-based device will resolve that. Surgery is the treatment that addresses it, and we will tell you so plainly.
We are educators before we are anything else. If we do not think a treatment will deliver what you are hoping for, we will say so rather than sell it to you.
You do not have to wait for stable weight
Most surgical practices will not treat you until your weight has been stable for several months.
That is a sensible requirement for surgery. It is not a requirement for what we do.
In our clinical experience, patients respond considerably better to collagen-stimulating treatments when they are treated within roughly the first three months of starting a GLP-1 medication. After that point the collagen response appears to diminish, likely because of the hormonal shifts these medications produce and reduced nutritional intake as appetite drops.
On the body this has a practical consequence. Building collagen while weight is still coming off means working with skin that is still supported, rather than trying to rebuild it after the tissue has already slackened. Most people do the reverse, wait until they have finished, look in the mirror, and only then come in.
If you are already past that point, treatment still works. It simply takes more sessions to reach the same place.
Treatments we use on the body
Sofwave
Ultrasound energy delivered into the mid-dermis, where controlled heat triggers new collagen formation. An integrated cooling system protects the skin surface, so the treatment stays comfortable.
There is no downtime. You can shower, apply your usual skincare and return to normal activity the same day. Results build over roughly three months as collagen rebuilds, and most clients need one treatment per area per year. FDA-approved and Health Canada-approved.
Sylfirm X
Microneedling combined with radiofrequency energy at a controlled depth. Where Sofwave works on structural firmness, Sylfirm X targets skin thickness and texture, which is usually the more visible problem on the arms, knees, inner thighs and chest.
We were the first clinic in Ontario to offer Sylfirm X, and it is what we reach for when crepey texture is the main complaint rather than laxity.
Treating Specific Areas
The abdomen, arms and knees each behave differently and are planned separately rather than as a single course.
How we usually sequence it
Every plan starts with a complimentary consultation. Because body treatment is area by area, the first conversation is about which areas matter most to you and what is realistic in each. Body results appear more gradually than facial results. This is a plan measured in seasons rather than appointments.
A typical approach:
- Assess each area separately. Laxity and texture are different problems and the balance shifts across the body.
- Sofwave where the concern is firmness and lift.
- Sylfirm X where the concern is crepey texture or thin skin, usually as a series.
- Reassess at three months, once collagen has had time to build, before deciding whether further sessions are worthwhile.
Start with a consultation
Our team is made up of Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, and we have been treating clients in King West for over five years. We work conservatively and we are honest about limits, including when the honest answer is that a treatment we offer is not the right one for you.
If loose skin is bothering you after weight loss, come in and let us look at each area properly. What is achievable varies enormously between people, and a real assessment beats guessing from a website.
Ozempic face frequently asked questions
What is Ozempic body?
Loose or crepey skin left after rapid weight loss on a GLP-1 medication. It affects the abdomen, arms, knees, inner thighs and chest most commonly. The same changes occur with Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound and Saxenda.
Can loose skin on my stomach be tightened without surgery?
Mild to moderate laxity responds well. Significant hanging skin does not, and we will tell you at your consultation which category you fall into rather than starting a series that will not deliver.
Do I need to wait until my weight is stable?
No. Surgical practices require that, but energy-based treatment does not, and in our experience starting earlier produces a better collagen response.
Does it hurt?
Sofwave is generally comfortable, with a warm sensation and cooling built into the device. Sylfirm X involves microneedling and we manage comfort during the session. Neither needs recovery time on the body.
How many sessions will I need?
Sofwave is usually one treatment per area per year. Sylfirm X is typically a series. It depends on the area and how much change we are working with, and we map it out at your consultation.
Will treatment help with stretch marks?
Stretch marks are a separate concern with their own approach. They often appear alongside loose skin after weight loss and we can address both, though not with a single treatment.
Why do my knees look loose when I have lost weight everywhere?
The skin there is thin and under constant mechanical stress from movement, so it shows laxity early. It also responds reasonably well to treatment for the same reason.
