Insights from Lindsay Jones, MN, NP | Cosmetic Nurse Practitioner at Lift Clinic Toronto
If there’s one thing that holds people back from booking lip filler, it’s the fear of swelling. How puffy will I look? How long until I look normal? Will everyone know?
Lindsay, Founder and Medical Director at Lift Clinic Toronto, hears these questions constantly, and her answer is always the same: “The swelling isn’t bad at all. Swelling with lip filler is typically only in the first couple of days at most. And with an ice pack and frequent icing, it makes it go down really quickly.”
Here’s what to actually expect, day by day.
The Lip Filler Swelling Timeline
Day 1: Immediately After Treatment
Your lips will look noticeably fuller and feel slightly firm, this is a combination of the filler itself and early swelling. Some mild redness and tenderness at the injection sites is normal. This is your lips at their most voluminous, not your final result.
Days 2 to 3: Peak Swelling
Swelling peaks around the 24 to 48-hour mark. Your lips may feel tight and look puffier than expected. Minor bruising can also appear, though not everyone experiences it. This is the window Lindsay recommends keeping clear: “We just recommend a couple days of social downtime just to make sure you don’t have any big plans seeing friends or family who you don’t want knowing you’ve had a treatment.”
Days 4 to 5: Settling Down
The majority of swelling has subsided. Your lips will start looking and feeling more natural, and any bruising should be fading. Most clients feel completely comfortable returning to their normal routine by this point.
Days 7 to 14: Your True Results
By one to two weeks, the filler has fully integrated with your tissue and the hyaluronic acid has attracted the right amount of moisture. Your lips will feel soft, smooth, and natural, this is the result you’ll be living with.
How to Manage Lip Filler Swelling
Lindsay’s top recommendation is frequent icing, and it genuinely makes a difference. Beyond that, a few simple aftercare steps help keep swelling to a minimum:
- Ice frequently: Apply a cold compress for 10 to 15 minutes at a time throughout the first day. This is the single most effective way to reduce swelling quickly.
- Sleep elevated: An extra pillow for the first night or two helps prevent fluid from pooling in your lips overnight.
- Avoid heat and exercise for 24 to 48 hours: Hot showers, saunas, and vigorous workouts increase circulation and can worsen swelling.
- Skip alcohol for 24 hours before and after: Alcohol thins the blood and can contribute to both swelling and bruising.
- Don’t touch your lips: Let the filler settle naturally. Avoid poking, pressing, or massaging unless your injector specifically tells you to.
- Stay hydrated and limit salty foods: Both support a smoother recovery.
Planning Your Lip Filler Appointment
A little scheduling strategy goes a long way. If you have an event coming up, book your appointment at least two weeks in advance so your lips are fully settled. A Thursday or Friday appointment is a popular choice, it gives you the weekend to ice, rest, and let the initial swelling resolve before Monday.
First-time clients should give themselves a bit of extra cushion, since everyone’s body responds differently to filler on their first go.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Lip filler swelling is almost always completely normal. However, contact your injector if you experience severe or worsening swelling after day 3, significant pain that doesn’t improve with icing, hard lumps that persist beyond two weeks, or any signs of infection like increasing redness or warmth. At Lift Clinic Toronto, our team is always available if you have questions post-treatment.
