Insights from Lindsay Jones, MN, NP | Founder and Medical Director at Lift Clinic Toronto
If you’ve been researching ways to enhance your lips, you’ve probably come across two options that sound similar but work very differently: the lip flip and lip filler. Understanding the difference is key to choosing the right approach for your goals, especially if you’re exploring lip enhancement for the first time.
Lindsay breaks it down simply:
What Is a Lip Flip?
“A lip flip is using Botox or Dysport to relax the upper lip muscle,” Lindsay explains. “The goal there is to make sure that when you smile, your upper lip doesn’t tuck under.”
That’s it, no volume, no plumping, no filler involved. A lip flip uses a small amount of neuromodulator (Botox® or Dysport®) injected along the upper lip border to gently relax the orbicularis oris muscle. When that muscle relaxes, your upper lip rolls slightly outward instead of disappearing when you smile. The result is a subtle lift that shows a bit more of your upper lip without adding any actual volume.
Lip Flip at a Glance
- What it does: Relaxes the upper lip muscle so it doesn’t tuck under when you smile
- What it uses: A small amount of Botox® or Dysport®
- What it doesn’t do: Add volume, hydration, or fullness
- How long it lasts: Approximately 6 to 8 weeks
- Downtime: None
What Is Lip Filler?
Lip filler is a different treatment entirely. As Lindsay explains: “Lip filler is a little bit different because it fills in a bit of the lines in your lip and it adds a bit of volume, so it hydrates while adding a little bit of plumpness.”
Lip filler uses a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, a soft, gel-like substance that’s injected directly into the lips to add volume, improve shape, smooth fine lines, and boost hydration. Because hyaluronic acid naturally attracts and holds water, the result is lips that look and feel plumper, smoother, and more hydrated.
Depending on your goals, filler can be used to subtly enhance what you already have, restore volume that’s been lost with age, improve symmetry, define your lip border, or smooth out vertical lip lines.
Lip Filler at a Glance
- What it does: Adds volume, hydration, shape, and definition
- What it uses: Hyaluronic acid dermal filler
- What it also does: Smooths lip lines and can improve symmetry
- How long it lasts: Approximately 6 to 12 months
- Downtime: Mild swelling for 1 to 3 days
How Do They Compare?
The simplest way to think about it: a lip flip changes how your lip moves, while lip filler changes how your lip looks.
A lip flip is a subtle, temporary adjustment that works best for people whose upper lip tends to disappear when they smile. It won’t add any fullness or change your lip shape at rest, it only affects how your lip behaves during movement. And because the effects of Botox and Dysport wear off relatively quickly, you’re looking at results that last about 6 to 8 weeks.
Lip filler, on the other hand, delivers visible changes to volume, texture, and shape that you’ll see both at rest and when you smile. It lasts significantly longer (6 to 12 months) and offers far more customization in terms of the result.
Which One Is Right for You?
This is where Lindsay offers a great perspective for anyone who’s on the fence: “Sometimes [a lip flip] can be a good first step if you’re interested in lip filler, but you don’t really know if you want to commit to the aesthetic of it.”
A lip flip is a low-commitment way to dip your toe into lip enhancement. Because it’s temporary and subtle, it lets you see how you feel about a slightly more visible upper lip before deciding whether filler is something you want to explore. There’s no volume change to adjust to, and if you decide it’s not for you, the effect simply wears off in a few weeks.
That said, if your goal is actually to add volume, hydration, or shape, or if your concern is thin lips, lost fullness, or lip lines, a lip flip alone won’t address those things. Filler is the treatment that delivers those results. And at Lift Clinic Toronto, we take a conservative approach, starting with a small amount of soft filler so the result is natural, subtle, and never overdone.
Some clients even choose to combine both, a lip flip to prevent the upper lip from tucking under, paired with a touch of filler for added volume and hydration. It’s a combination that can give you the best of both worlds.
