Insights from Lindsay Jones, MN, NP | Cosmetic Nurse Practitioner at Lift Clinic Toronto
If you’ve been researching skin treatments lately, there’s a good chance you’ve come across both Sylfirm X and Tixel® 2. They’re two of the most advanced options available for stimulating collagen and improving your skin, and we’re proud to offer both at Lift Clinic Toronto. But they work in very different ways, and choosing the right one depends entirely on what your skin actually needs.
We asked Lindsay, one of our Nurse Injectors, to break down the key differences. Her explanation is one of the most common conversations she has with clients, and it’s a question worth answering properly, because understanding what each treatment does (and doesn’t do) is the first step toward getting the results you’re looking for.
Why Collagen Matters More Than You Think
Before we get into the treatments themselves, it helps to understand why collagen is at the centre of so many skin concerns. Collagen is the structural protein that gives your skin its firmness, elasticity, and resilience. It’s essentially the scaffolding that holds everything together.
The challenge? Our bodies naturally produce less collagen as we age. Starting in our mid-20s, collagen production decreases by approximately 1% per year. By the time we reach our 40s, that decline becomes increasingly visible as fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, and changes in texture.
As Lindsay puts it: “We know we lose collagen every single year, so collagen-stimulating treatments are still very relevant, you just want to make sure you’re using the right treatment for the right indications.”
That’s where the Sylfirm X vs. Tixel® 2 conversation comes in. Both treatments stimulate collagen production, but they do it in different ways and at different depths, which means they’re suited to different concerns.
What Is Sylfirm X RF Microneedling?
Sylfirm X is a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment. It uses tiny microneedles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin while simultaneously delivering RF energy deep into the tissue. This dual action, needles plus heat, stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the dermis, making it one of the most effective treatments available for skin tightening and collagen remodelling.
Lift Clinic Toronto was the first clinic in Ontario to introduce Sylfirm X, and it remains one of our most recommended treatments for clients looking to address skin laxity, texture, and overall skin quality.
What Sylfirm X Is Best For
- Skin tightening and lifting
- Collagen remodelling in deeper tissue layers
- Fine lines and wrinkles (particularly moderate to deep)
- Acne scarring and enlarged pores
- Melasma and rosacea (thanks to its unique dual-wave pulsed RF technology)
- Overall skin tone, texture, and quality
How a Sylfirm X Treatment Works
Sylfirm X is the world’s first dual-wave RF microneedling device, meaning it can deliver both continuous-wave and pulsed-wave radiofrequency. The continuous wave targets collagen tightening and remodelling in deeper tissue, while the pulsed wave selectively targets abnormal blood vessels and pigmentation, making it uniquely effective for tricky conditions like melasma and rosacea that other devices can’t safely address.
A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and most clients describe the sensation as a warm, tingling feeling. Sessions typically take about 60 minutes depending on the treatment area, and you can expect mild redness for 24–48 hours afterward. Most clients benefit from a series of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with maintenance once or twice a year.
What Is Tixel® 2 Skin Resurfacing?
Tixel® 2 (also known as Tixel C) is a fractional skin resurfacing treatment that uses an entirely different technology. Rather than needles and RF energy, Tixel® 2 uses patented Thermal-Mechanical Action (TMA®), a medical-grade titanium tip with tiny heated pyramids that briefly touch the skin’s surface to create controlled micro-channels and stimulate cell turnover on the top layer of the skin.
Lift Clinic Toronto was the second clinic in Canada to offer Tixel® 2, and the reason we brought it in is very specific. As Lindsay explains: “The reason we brought Tixel in is for those really, really resilient fine lines around the eyes that Botox can’t treat.”
What Tixel® 2 Is Best For
- Fine lines and wrinkles on the skin’s surface (especially around the eyes)
- Skin resurfacing and improving surface texture
- Crow’s feet and under-eye fine lines
- Upper eyelid skin laxity and crepiness
- Fine lines around the nose, lips, and mouth
- Dull skin and uneven skin tone
- Enhanced absorption of rejuvenating serums through micro-channels
How a Tixel® 2 Treatment Works
The Tixel® 2 device features a grid of tiny titanium pyramids heated to a precise temperature. When briefly applied to the skin, these tips create controlled micro-injuries and temporary micro-channels without needles, without laser energy, and without breaking the skin barrier the way traditional treatments do. This triggers your skin’s natural healing response and increases cell turnover on that top layer of skin.
One of the standout features of Tixel® 2 is its specialized handpiece designed specifically for delicate areas. As Lindsay explains: “It has a handpiece that goes around the eyes as well as those tiny nooks and crannies around the nose and the lips and the mouth. It’s really excellent for treating those very tiny areas with very thin skin.”
Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, and a topical anesthetic is applied for comfort. You’ll experience redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24–48 hours, with minimal downtime compared to laser resurfacing. For optimal results, we recommend 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Sylfirm X vs. Tixel® 2: The Key Differences at a Glance
The simplest way to think about it? Sylfirm X works from the inside out, and Tixel® 2 works from the outside in.
Lindsay sums it up perfectly: “Sylfirm X is a better skin tightening treatment, it uses microneedling channels with heat to stimulate collagen in deeper tissues. Whereas Tixel is a resurfacing treatment. On that top layer of skin where you see some of the cracks, those fine lines, those wrinkles, especially around the eyes, you would choose Tixel.”

How to Know Which Treatment Is Right for You
The best treatment for you depends entirely on what your skin needs most right now. Here’s a quick guide:
You Might Want Sylfirm X If:
- You’re noticing overall skin laxity or sagging, particularly along the jawline, cheeks, or neck
- You want to address moderate to deeper wrinkles and fine lines
- You’re dealing with acne scarring, enlarged pores, or uneven texture
- You have melasma, rosacea, or redness that hasn’t responded well to other treatments
- You’re looking for a comprehensive collagen remodelling treatment that targets the skin’s deeper structure
You Might Want Tixel® 2 If:
- You’re bothered by fine lines around your eyes that Botox can’t address, those creases where concealer or foundation settles into
- You have crepiness or skin bunching around the upper or lower eyelids
- You want to smooth out lip lines, nasolabial folds, or fine lines around the nose and mouth
- Your main concern is surface texture, dullness, or uneven skin tone
- You’re looking for skin resurfacing results similar to laser treatments but with less downtime
Can You Combine Sylfirm X and Tixel® 2?
Absolutely, and in many cases, that’s exactly what we recommend. Because these two treatments work at different depths and address different concerns, they complement each other beautifully when used as part of a comprehensive skincare plan.
For example, you might use Sylfirm X to address skin tightening and collagen remodelling across the face, and then use Tixel® 2 to target those stubborn fine lines around the eyes and mouth that need surface-level resurfacing. Think of Sylfirm X as strengthening the foundation and Tixel® 2 as refining the finish.
Your treatment plan might also include other complementary options like Botox or Dysport to prevent dynamic wrinkles, Sofwave™ for non-invasive skin lifting, or medical-grade skincare to maintain your results between sessions. The key is finding the right combination for your unique skin, and that’s exactly what our team helps you figure out during your consultation.
Why Clients Trust Lift Clinic Toronto for Advanced Skin Treatments
There’s a reason we were the first clinic in Ontario to offer Sylfirm X and among the first in Canada to bring in Tixel® 2: we’re committed to staying at the forefront of evidence-based aesthetic technology so our clients have access to the best options available.
But having the latest technology is only part of the equation. What truly matters is the expertise and honesty behind it. Our team of experienced Registered Nurses takes the time to assess your skin, understand your goals, and recommend the treatment that’s actually right for you, even if that means suggesting a different approach than what you came in expecting.
We believe in a start-low, go-slow philosophy because natural-looking results that build over time are always more beautiful than dramatic overnight changes. And we’ll never recommend a treatment we don’t believe will deliver the results you’re looking for.
