If you’ve been researching skin treatments lately, there’s a good chance you’ve come across both Sylfirm X and Tixel® 2. We asked Lindsay, one of our Nurse Injectors, to break down the key differences. Before we get into the treatments themselves, it helps to understand why collagen is at the centre of so many skin concerns. Collagen is the structural protein that gives your skin its firmness, elasticity, and resilience. It’s essentially the scaffolding that holds everything together.
The challenge? Our bodies naturally produce less collagen as we age. Starting in our mid-20s, collagen production decreases by approximately 1% per year. By the time we reach our 40s, that decline becomes increasingly visible as fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, and changes in texture.
As Lindsay puts it: “We know we lose collagen every single year, so collagen-stimulating treatments are still very relevant, you just want to make sure you’re using the right treatment for the right indications.”
That’s where the Sylfirm X vs. Tixel® 2 conversation comes in. Both treatments stimulate collagen production, but they do it in different ways and at different depths, which means they’re suited to different concerns.
Sylfirm X is a radiofrequency (RF) microneedling treatment. It uses tiny microneedles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin while simultaneously delivering RF energy deep into the tissue. This dual action, needles plus heat, stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the dermis, making it one of the most effective treatments available for skin tightening and collagen remodelling.

Sylfirm X is the world’s first dual-wave RF microneedling device, meaning it can deliver both continuous-wave and pulsed-wave radiofrequency. The continuous wave targets collagen tightening and remodelling in deeper tissue, while the pulsed wave selectively targets abnormal blood vessels and pigmentation, making it uniquely effective for tricky conditions like melasma and rosacea that other devices can’t safely address.
A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and most clients describe the sensation as a warm, tingling feeling. Sessions typically take about 60 minutes depending on the treatment area, and you can expect mild redness for 24–48 hours afterward. Most clients benefit from a series of 3–4 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, with maintenance once or twice a year.
Tixel® 2 (also known as Tixel C) is a fractional skin resurfacing treatment that uses an entirely different technology. Rather than needles and RF energy, Tixel® 2 uses patented Thermal-Mechanical Action (TMA®), a medical-grade titanium tip with tiny heated pyramids that briefly touch the skin’s surface to create controlled micro-channels and stimulate cell turnover on the top layer of the skin.
Lift Clinic Toronto was the second clinic in Canada to offer Tixel® 2, and the reason we brought it in is very specific. As Lindsay explains: “The reason we brought Tixel in is for those really, really resilient fine lines around the eyes that Botox can’t treat.”
The Tixel® 2 device features a grid of tiny titanium pyramids heated to a precise temperature. When briefly applied to the skin, these tips create controlled micro-injuries and temporary micro-channels without needles, without laser energy, and without breaking the skin barrier the way traditional treatments do. This triggers your skin’s natural healing response and increases cell turnover on that top layer of skin.
One of the standout features of Tixel® 2 is its specialized handpiece designed specifically for delicate areas. As Lindsay explains: “It has a handpiece that goes around the eyes as well as those tiny nooks and crannies around the nose and the lips and the mouth. It’s really excellent for treating those very tiny areas with very thin skin.”
Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, and a topical anesthetic is applied for comfort. You’ll experience redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24–48 hours, with minimal downtime compared to laser resurfacing. For optimal results, we recommend 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
The simplest way to think about it? Sylfirm X works from the inside out, and Tixel® 2 works from the outside in.
Lindsay sums it up perfectly: “Sylfirm X is a better skin tightening treatment, it uses microneedling channels with heat to stimulate collagen in deeper tissues. Whereas Tixel is a resurfacing treatment. On that top layer of skin where you see some of the cracks, those fine lines, those wrinkles, especially around the eyes, you would choose Tixel.”
